Bullying happens a lot more than we think. And it affects teens a lot more than we think.
When you’re a teen being bullied, your bullies aren’t random kids. They’re your peers, your classmates tearing you down from inside out. What they say gets in your head and makes you question who you are, and why you even exist.
They tear you apart from your friends. Sometimes they even pretend to be on your side and then when you’re at your most vulnerable, they stab you in the back. They make you believe you’re alone and that nobody is on your side.
Everyday, kids are being bullied because they are different. Because they eat different foods, follow a different religion or culture, wear different clothes, look different, etc.
The bullies may be kids, but their words and actions hurt. They go deep, deeper than most people realize. They kick you, taunt you, pick at every part of your identity. Their words and actions feel like continuous paper cuts in your self esteem and identity.
Bullying is not something that’ll just stop or you’ll just get over. It can cause real psychological and mental problems in a teenager.
Bullying and its effects are so real. And parents don’t realize the immensity of it. And teens are too scared to open up about it.
So, communicate.
Parents, talk to your kids and check in on them. Don’t push their worries aside, but instead, take them in and listen to them.
Teens, talk to your parents. They are here to protect you and they care. You’re not alone, there’s someone in your corner.
